My impression: “I watched six new works by Muttoni.”
I hadn’t checked the exhibition information for “Essence of Mutoni” at the Kenji Taki Gallery in Roppongi, so seeing Mutoni’s new works while visiting other galleries was a pleasant surprise.
The artist was present when I visited and gave me a brief explanation of each piece as it was activated. Each piece had its own story and was wonderful.
In particular, the first piece I saw, “Doll,” had a double structure in which one doll manipulated another; both were mechanically operated. However, the difference in the movements of the manipulating and manipulated dolls made it seem as if a person were controlling them. The movements of the characters in Mutoni’s works are captivating.
“Sketch of a Skyscraper,” which seems to depict a character’s dream one night, was also impressive. The stage moved dynamically, making it feel like watching a musical.
The exhibited works consisted of four closed boxes and two open boxes. The titles of the works are as follows:
- Wings
- Singer
- Temptation (Open)
- Doll
- Angel
- Skyscraper Sketch (Open)
Summary
I didn’t have enough time to properly appreciate the new work, “Temptation,” at Art Fair Tokyo, so it was great to see it here in Roppongi alongside the other five pieces.
I’ve seen a lot of Mutoni’s work this year, so I’d like to visit his solo exhibition at the Hachioji Yume Museum at the end of this year. I couldn’t go at the end of last year.
Furthermore, as for future exhibitions, following his solo exhibition at the Hachioji Yume Museum at the end of 2025, “Muttoni World Karakuri Theater VI” will be held at the Hachioji Yume Museum from November 14, 2026 (Sat) to January 11, 2027 (Mon/Holiday), 10:00 to 19:00, spanning across the new year.
