1.Overview
The Touit 32mm F1.8 is one of the three lenses released by Carl Zeiss in 2013 for mirrorless cameras with APS-C size sensors, and is the standard.
The lenses are released under the unified brand name Touit. The lens itself is named Planar, which is given to CARL ZEISS lenses with a double Gauss lens configuration.
The main features are a focal length of 32mm, a lens configuration of 8 elements in 5 groups, a modified double Gauss type, a simple spherical lens, and a minimum shooting distance of 0.18m. Please refer to the specifications table for detailed specifications.
Compatible mounts are Sony E and Fujifilm X.
The development of this lens brand Touit has stopped after the release of three lenses.
2.Usability
I bought the Touit 32mm F1.8 for Fujifilm X.
It is a modern standard lens, with almost no distortion, and if you attach the deep standard hood, it will not pick up any mysterious light even in backlight. I did not shoot with the sun directly in the frame, so I do not know about ghosts or flares.
For autofocus, I mostly used the AF-S of the X-Pro2, and although the focus speed was not particularly fast, the focus position moved at a satisfactory speed. The autofocus accuracy is not a problem for landscapes or larger targets.
When aiming at a cat’s eyes at full aperture, there were times when the focus was slightly off even though I thought I was aiming at the eyes. This is also due to the photographer’s skill, so it cannot be said to be a problem with the camera or lens.
As for operation, it is a single-focus lens, so it is simple, and the Fujifilm version is equipped with a focus ring and aperture ring. The A position is aperture auto, and the aperture ring can be used to mechanically set the aperture value to any value.
The Sony version only has a focus ring and does not have an aperture ring. Aperture adjustment is done from the camera side.
The lens appearance is similar to that of the Touit, with the rubber-wrapped focus ring reducing the texture of the lens. The hood is compact considering its depth, so it doesn’t get in the way when carrying it around.
3.Summary
In conclusion, to sum up the Touit 32mm, it delivers satisfactory image quality as an APS-C standard lens.
The value of choosing this lens is questionable, as this focal length is in competition with prime lenses from various companies as well as zoom lenses, making it a difficult choice.
Rather than purchasing the 32mm alone, it would be worth considering a plan to collect three Zeiss Touit lenses and enjoy shooting with lenses that have the same image quality.
Specification and Competitor
As mentioned in the summary, there is a wide range of standard lenses for APS-C. Fujifilm has two 35mm lenses, one 33mm lens, and many zoom lenses have focal lengths of 32-35mm.
Here, we compared it with FUJIFILM’s XF 35mm F2.
The Touit 32mm adds two lenses to the rear group of the classic 4-group, 6-element double Gauss lens. It is thought to be a lens for aberration correction that is possible only with a mirrorless camera with a short flange back.
The XF35mm F2 seems to be a newly designed lens, and it appears to optimize photoaberration by evenly distributing the lenses from close to the sensor surface. Since the XF35mm F1.4 R is a relatively classic double Gauss type development, it can be seen that the design has changed significantly. And the latest lens, the XF33mm, released in 2021, has a retrofocus configuration and uses anomalous dispersion glass and aspherical lenses in abundance, so the lens performance seems high.
