Exhibition Overview

Impressions: [A Human and a Beast Praying in Silence]

This exhibition features fifteen new paintings, not including sculptures.

The large triptych ‘Gate’, which is the first thing you see upon entering the gallery, has a powerful presence. Resembling a strong underground gate and legs closing in, it is a work that should definitely be seen in person.

I spoke briefly with the artist, who was present at the gallery, and he mentioned that the current chaotic world situation is influencing his work. Several pieces in this exhibition evoke a sense of prayer.

One piece that particularly caught my eye was ‘Omen’, which is in the centre of the photo below. Its name links directly to the exhibition’s title, ‘Spring and Visitor from afar’. The bird-like creature depicted on the four-legged beast resembles a person with their arms raised in prayer, creating an ominous feeling for the viewer.

The works ‘Morning’ and ‘Night’ (second photo) feature a slightly different colour palette to his previous works. The faint vermilion undercoat is visible, creating an impressive depiction of blood-tinged skin.

Finally, five sculptures are on display in this exhibition. The motifs and materials are similar to those used in paintings, and the sculptures have a charming quality, as if they have stepped right out of a painting. Having previously created life-sized works, the artist hopes to take on another large-scale sculpture if the opportunity to exhibit in a large venue arises, and is looking forward to that chance.
