Review
LEICA DIGILUX 4.3 is a digital camera that LEICA procured on an OEM basis using FUJIFILM-FinePix4700Z.
This will be the last time we will procure camera bodies from FUJIFILM. As in previous models, there are DIGILUX Zoom and DIGILUX in front of this camera.
The zoom lens seems to have been reused since DIGILUX ZOOM, and the DIGILUX 4.3 has a slightly larger sensor size, making it more wide-angle in 35mm format.
Like DIGILUX, this model uses two AA batteries, so it is easy to obtain. Only DIGILIUX Zoom uses NP-80 lithium-ion batteries. Recording media are smart media that already have a nostalgic feel to them.
The opening screen when you turn on the power is Leica Custom, but the camera itself is still FUJIFILM, so if you have used the same company’s compact digital cameras, you will be able to use it without any hesitation. From the outside, it looks like the red badge was placed in an empty spot.
The focal length is 36mm, so it’s undeniably old, and the f/number at the telephoto end of 108mm is 4.5, which is dark, so you’ll have trouble with camera shake. Of course, this was not the era when cameras were equipped with image stabilization.
Lenses have not been significantly corrected for distortion, and compact digital cameras were in an era before active software correction, and there are focal lengths where distortion is noticeable in JPEG images.
It’s natural that customization is limited to the appearance, but the recorded images, such as color tone, retain the rich characteristics of FUJIFILM, and have a different taste from LEICA-manufactured compact digital cameras such as the LEICA X1.
If you are using a second-hand SmartMedia recording media that comes with your camera, you will have no trouble using it. If you do not own one, you will need to look for it on the used market, and be careful as smart media on the used market can be expensive.
I purchased this camera second-hand, but unfortunately, while using it for the third day after receiving it, I developed a “lens shutter abnormality” that is common with this camera, and the lens could no longer be stored in the camera. Since the manufacturer’s warranty had already expired, the product was returned to the place of purchase for a refund.
