The Hasselblad HC 150mm is a medium telephoto lens for Hasselblad’s H-series cameras. A review of the lens using it with a HASSELBLAD X-series camera is provided on the linked page.
Hasselblad’s H-series lenses come in two main versions: the newer models known as Orange Dot and the older models, including the FUJINON brand. When used with Leica S-series cameras, both new and older models can be used, and autofocus is possible as long as there are no problems with the lens.
This review focuses solely on use with the LEICA S typ007.
When using the HASSELBLAD HC 150mm with a LEICA S typ007, autofocus can be used with the Leica S-Adapter H, a genuine Leica accessory. When used with the 45mm x 30mm medium-format digital sensor used by the LEICA S-series cameras, the 35mm equivalent focal length is 120mm.
The combined weight of the lens and camera is just over 2kg, and since the volume of the camera and lens is larger than that of a regular SLR camera, it feels quite heavy when you first hold it. Still, it’s on the lighter side for a medium-format SLR camera system, so you’ll get used to it.
The focal length of 120mm is an easy-to-use medium-telephoto lens, and since it achieves the compression effect of a 150mm actual focal length, it’s well-suited for portraits and other situations where the subject is centered. It also produces beautiful, smooth bokeh in the foreground and background, making it effective at highlighting the subject.
My HC 150mm is an older lens without an orange dot, and I can use autofocus with the LEICA S series by using the LEICA S-Adapter H. However, as is common with HASSELBLAD H series lenses, the autofocus is slow, and the camera’s autofocus unit is old and not very accurate, so in the field I only use it for still life photography like flowers.
When focusing manually, it is preferable to use a Microprism Matte focusing screen, but because a Microprism Matte is a focusing screen designed specifically for central focus, there is a risk that the results will be monotonous.
This non-orange dot lens cannot be used with autofocus on HASSELBLAD X series cameras such as the HASSELBLAD X2D. More details on this situation are provided on the linked page.
The minimum focusing distance is 1.3m, and with the LEICA S, extension tubes cannot be used, making close-up photography difficult. Therefore, this lens is often used with the HASSELBLAD X series, which can use extension tubes.
