Review

The 05 Toy Lens Telephoto for Pentax Q has a focal length of 18mm, and when converted to a 35mm equivalent focal length, the Q and Q10 are 99mm, and the Q7 and Q-S1 are 94mm, making them medium telephoto lenses.

The Q7 and Q-S1 have different 35mm equivalent values calculated from the sensor size, but this lens was released during the Q era and the image circle cannot cover a 1/1.7 sensor, so the camera crops it to a usable range. The raw images generated by the Q10 are 12 megapixels at a resolution of 4000×3000, but the raw images generated by the Q7 are cropped to a resolution of 3629×2722, about 10% smaller. However, the JPG images of the Q7 are saved at a resolution of 4000×3000, so it can be confirmed that the resolution is supplemented by image processing within the camera.

The Unique Lens is a lens released to supplement the poor lens lineup, and is designed to be cheap. This lens is no exception, with a simple construction, plastic mount, fixed F8 aperture, and no mechanical shutter, but the lens is made up of three elements in three groups, so it seems to be a triplet.

The problem with this lens is that, like the other three unique lenses, the focus positions are Near and Far, and Far is over-inflated, not infinity.

This is a problem shared with the Toy Wide, but since the Toy Telephoto is a medium telephoto lens, if you do not focus precisely, the photo will be blurry. Since the aperture value is dark at F8, it becomes easy to blur when there is little light, so care must be taken. Also, in low-light scenes, if the ISO is set to Auto, the ISO sensitivity of the camera will increase, resulting in a rough image.
If you focus properly in a bright scene, the image will be fairly sharp.

This lens also does not process the image inside the camera when shooting JPG, and both Raw and JPG images are recorded without correction.

The Pentax Q series does not have a mechanical shutter on the camera side, so the unique lens series, including this lens, uses the sensor’s shutter to shoot.

I bought it in 2024, but when I was looking for a lens, I was surprised to see that the used prices had skyrocketed. When it was no longer on sale, it was less than 5,000 yen, but in some stores it was over 20,000 yen. The store where I bought it had all four types of Toilet Lenses in stock, and although they were not four times the price as mentioned above, they were all priced at a premium.
