Review

The 02 standard zoom lens for the Pentax Q has a focal length of 5-15mm, which is equivalent to a 35mm equivalent focal length of 28-80mm for the Q and Q10, and 23-69mm for the Q7 and Q-S1.

The Pentax Q series does not have a mechanical shutter on the camera side, so the four AF-compatible lenses, including this lens, are equipped with a leaf shutter on the small lens body.

When used with the Q10, it becomes a fairly ordinary zoom lens with a slightly old-fashioned 28mm wide-angle to 80mm telephoto. With the Q7, it starts at 23mm, which is a little wider, and is closer to the focal length of a modern standard zoom lens.

The maximum aperture is generally F2.8 on the wide-angle 5mm side, but F4.5 on the telephoto 15mm side, which is dark, so caution is required as it can be prone to blurring and the ISO sensitivity can be increased. When in use, the lens length is longest at 5mm at the wide-angle end, and shortest at 15mm at the telephoto end. When stored, it is 15mm, so it seems to be a bit troublesome for users who often use the wide-angle side. It is a bit disappointing that it is not internal focus like the 06 TELEPHOTO ZOOM.

The minimum shooting distance is 0.3m throughout, so it seems that you can get close to 15mm at the telephoto end, 70mm and 80mm in 35mm equivalent, but since the actual focal length is 5 to 15mm, it seems possible to shorten the minimum shooting distance, but since the working distance from the tip of the lens is about 250mm, it is sufficient for close-up shooting performance for general photography.

Looking at the results of using the lens, as with any lens, the roughness unique to compact digital cameras can be noticeable at 1:1 size, but when reduced to about 1/2, the image appears to be fine.

As for image distortion, Raw is quite distorted, so when developing from Raw, you will want to adjust the color tone and correct the distortion. JPG is corrected automatically.

I haven’t used it much in backlit conditions where the sun is directly in front of me, but I’ve never experienced any serious ghosting. Looking at the backlit resistance of other lenses, this lens also seems questionable, so I’ll test it sometime.

Even when used with the Q7, which has a slightly larger sensor size than the Q10, there is no light falloff in the corners, but vignetting seems to occur when using the old model hood (PH-SBA40.5mm), and a new model hood (PH-RBB40.5) is provided.

The following options are available for the lens.

  • PH-RBB40.5…Lens hood (for Q7)
  • PH-SBA40.5mm…(for Q10)
  • O-LC40.5…Front lens cap (40.5mm) ←Link is an Amazon affiliate link
  • JJC compatible products for the old hood are on sale on Amazon ←Link is an Amazon affiliate link

New hoods are also on sale, but they are more than 10 times the price ←Link is an Amazon affiliate link

The lens has a list price of 25,000 yen, which is quite cheap for a lens with a shutter mechanism, but the used price as of 2024 is less than 10,000 yen. However, although the lens is cheap, the body price remains high, making it a difficult decision to become a new user.
