Review

1.Overview
The 07-mount shield lens for the Pentax Q has a focal length of 3.2mm, which, when converted to a 35mm equivalent, is a standard lens with a focal length of 63mm for the Q and Q10, and 53mm for the Q7 and Q-S1.
Unique lenses were released to supplement a Pentax camera’s limited lens lineup, and are designed to be affordable. This lens is no exception, with a simple design: a plastic mount, a single lens, a fixed f/9 aperture, and no mechanical shutter.
Since the Pentax Q series does not have a mechanical shutter on the camera itself, this lens and other unique lenses in the series use the sensor’s shutter for shooting.
2.Usability
Looking at the image quality of the 07-mount shield lens for the Pentax Q, it’s by no means a bad lens, and I’m impressed by what a single lens can produce.
Unlike other unique lenses, it can only shoot with pan focus, so once attached to the camera, all you have to do is press the shutter.
Also, since the focal length is 50mm to 60mm in 35mm film equivalent, if you’re not used to it and try no-find shooting without looking at the LCD screen, you often end up missing the subject you want.
Since all Pentax Q series cameras have a fixed rear LCD screen, I’ve come to realize the convenience of cameras with movable rear LCD screens.
Even though it’s a pan focus lens with an aperture of f/9, there is a focal point, and the sharpest image is captured at a distance of about 3m in the center. The edges become blurry due to aberrations.
Since the results vary greatly depending on the distance from the subject, once you understand the lens’s quirks and learn to manipulate it, you can achieve effects that are only possible with this lens and a Pentax Q camera. This is a lens that tests the photographer’s imagination and ingenuity.
It seems that no particular consideration has been given to in-camera image processing, and there is no difference in the results between Raw and JPG when using this lens.
3.Summary
In conclusion, to sum up the 07-mount shield lens for Pentax Q, it’s an interesting lens if you can enjoy its limitations, but as of 2025, I’ve seen used prices far exceeding the final selling price of 2,000 yen.
Everyone has their own values, but I’m not sure if this is a lens worth going that far for, and I think 5,000 yen is the limit.
Specifications, Considerations, etc.
As part of a similar project to the 07 Mount Shield Lens for the Pentax Q, OM Systems (formerly Olympus) is releasing two lenses and Fujifilm is releasing one.
These lenses have the same focal length as the 07 Mount Shield lenses, but the actual image field varies depending on the sensor’s magnification. Their 35mm film equivalent focal lengths range from roughly 20mm to 35mm, allowing for a wide field of view, reducing the chance of missing a subject when shooting without focusing.
The two OM-SYSTEMS lenses are the BCL-0980 Fisheye Body Cap Lens (9mm F8.0 Fisheye), which uses two aspherical lenses in a four-group, five-element configuration, and the BCL-1580 Body Cap Lens (15mm F8), which uses three elements in three groups and includes a focus mechanism. These lenses are manufactured at a reasonable cost and are more versatile than the 07 Mount Shield lenses.
Fujifilm also has a lens based on the same concept, the X-Mount filter lens “XM-FL,” which has three built-in filters for an even more playful feel.
The downside of this lens is that it has a bad habit of selling at a premium price in the used market, even after it has been discontinued, with a list price of around 10,000 yen.
Chinese manufacturers have also been releasing similar deep focus lenses, but we won’t go into detail on those here as there is no end to them.
It is often the case that fun lenses become expensive after they are discontinued, so this type of lens is launched at a low price so if you’re interested, it’s a good idea to buy it now.
