1.Overview

The 05 Toy Telephoto Lens for the Pentax Q has a focal length of 18mm, which translates to a 99mm focal length on the Q and Q10, and a 94mm focal length on the Q7 and Q-S1, making it a medium telephoto lens.

The 35mm equivalent values for the Q7 and Q-S1 differ from those calculated based on the sensor size, but this lens was released during the Q era and its image circle does not cover a 1/1.7 sensor, so it is cropped to a usable size on the camera. Raw images generated by the Q10 are 12 megapixels at 4000×3000, while raw images generated by the Q7 are cropped to a resolution of 3629×2722, approximately 10% smaller. However, JPG images from the Q7 are saved at 4000×3000, confirming that the resolution is compensated for by in-camera image processing.

Unique lenses were released to supplement a camera’s limited lens lineup and are designed to be affordable. This lens is no exception, with a simple design, featuring a plastic mount, a fixed F8 aperture, and no mechanical shutter, but the lens configuration is thought to be a triplet, with three elements in three groups.

2.Usability

Like the other three unique lenses, the 05 Toy Lens Telephoto for Pentax Q has near and far focus positions, with the far position being over-inflation rather than infinity.
This is an issue shared with the Toy Wide, but because the Toy Telephoto is a medium telephoto lens, the focus must be adjusted fairly precisely, resulting in blurry photos. Because the aperture is a low f/8, it’s prone to blurring in low light, so caution is required. Also, in low-light situations, setting the ISO to auto will increase the camera’s ISO sensitivity, resulting in grainy images.
When focusing properly in bright situations, the image is reasonably sharp.
This lens also does not perform internal processing when capturing JPGs, recording uncorrected images in both RAW and JPG formats.

Because the Pentax Q series does not have a mechanical shutter, this lens and other unique lenses in the series use the sensor’s shutter.

I purchased this lens in 2024, and was surprised to find that used prices had skyrocketed while searching for a lens. When they were no longer on sale, they were priced at under 5,000 yen, but in some stores they are now over 20,000 yen. The store where I bought them had all four types of Toilet Lenses in stock, and although they weren’t four times the price as mentioned above, they were all priced at a premium.

3.Summary

In conclusion, to sum up the 05 Toy Lens Telephoto for Pentax Q, as of 2025, the used price is far more than the list price of 5,000 yen, but I do not think that the lens is worth that price.
