This exhibition is organized by the NMWA Japan Committee and is positioned as an official exhibition linked to the “Women to Watch” international program developed by the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA), based in Washington, D.C., USA.
The five participating artists were selected based on recommendations from Ms. Yukie Kamiya, Chief Curator of the National Art Center, Tokyo. One Japanese representative will be selected from these five artists in early April 2026, after the conclusion of this exhibition, to participate in the 8th “Women to Watch” exhibition scheduled to be held in the United States in 2027.
The NMWA official website states that Women to Watch 2027 will feature artists from 16 US states, Italy, Japan, South Asia, and the United Kingdom.
Impression: “A collaboration of female artists with books as their theme.”
According to the NMWA, the exhibition title, “A Book Arts Revolution,” is “an exhibition that dynamically explores works of art in the form of books,” and in order to select Japan’s representative, this exhibition features works that use books as their subject matter.
Saya Irie
The exhibition features two types of bird dust series: bird sculptures inspired by illustrations from illustrated encyclopedias, and bird illustrations combined with sculptures.

Sachiko Kazama
Two works from the series “FLOW” are on display, and books and haiku poems are depicted within the artwork.
- FLOW(雄島//誰まつしまぞ)・FLOW (Oshima/Taga Matsushimazo) 2023
- FLOW(袖の渡り/涙川)・FLOW (Sode no watari/Namidagawa) 2023

Aiko Miyanaga
The installation, Strata (2018-2019), which uses glass books, is on display.
This is a work I previously saw in Kiyosumi-Shirakawa, but due to space limitations, the number of books is reduced.

Hanako Murakami
The exhibition features five works from the Untitled series and “The Turn Over” (2019).
The Untitled series works are accompanied by poems in both Japanese and English, and include recordings of the sound of turning pages. Together with “The Turn Over,” they form an installation.

Tomoko Yoneda
The exhibition features three works from Yoneda’s representative eyewear series, “Between the Visible and the Invisible” (1998-). The eyeglasses depicted in these works are actually eyeglasses worn by the people depicted.
- サルトルの眼鏡『レ・タン・モデルヌ』の編集長サルトルに宛てられたカミュからの書簡を見る(2018)
- Sartre’s glasses – Viewing a letter by Albert Camus addressed to Sartre when he was the director of Les Temos Modernes(2018)
- マハトマ・ガンジーの眼鏡 『沈黙の日』の最後のノートを見る(2003)
- Gandhi’s Glasses – Viewing a note written on his ‘day of silence’ shortly before his death(2003)
- 藤田嗣治の眼鏡 一日本出国を助けたシャーマン GHQ民政官に送った電報を見る
- Foujita’s Glasses – Viewing a telegram he sent to GHQ officer Sherman who helped him leave Japan(2015)

Summary
The quality of the works exhibited by the five mid-career to veteran artists was high and impressive, and the exhibition space, though not particularly large, was well-organized with a balanced arrangement of pieces.
Since the selection criteria are unclear, this might be off the mark, but even the least experienced artists, Irie and Murakami, have about 20 years of experience, while Kazama, Miyanaga, and Yoneda have even longer careers. Among this established group of artists, I think it would have been interesting to see an artist with a slightly shorter career, such as Andy Ayaka Yamamoto, who creates sugar-coated books.
