My impressions: “Very generous portions”

Kenji Taki Gallery (S008) brought one Mutoni piece again this time. They were having a demonstration, with a woman singing under a disco ball.

GOCA by Garde (N067) had artist Oscar Oiwa, who had come from New York, at the venue for four days. I was able to get him to sign a piece I had previously purchased when he wasn’t too busy.

Gallery Tsubaki (N062) was exhibiting four new sculptures, three drawings, and two replicas by Moe Nakamura. Her sculptures are always so cute.

Art Court Gallery (S012) was exhibiting three sculptures by Rui Sasaki, whose impressive installation I saw at the Aichi International Art Festival. It seems they brought five pieces, but due to space limitations, only three were on display.

At ShugoArts (S034), I was particularly struck by Ritsue Mishima’s glass works (3 pieces), which were impressive at the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, and five pieces by Rina Matsudaira, whose work was impressive at the Saitama Prefectural Museum of Modern Art’s Artist Project #2.08 Code and Mode exhibition. Tomoko Yoneda’s photographic works were displayed in the staff room.

BASE GALLERY (S013) exhibited glass sculptures and two-dimensional works by Katsuhito Nishikawa, whose final exhibition at the DIC Kawamura Memorial Museum of Art was held there.

Pontone Gallery (N003) offered a rare opportunity to see works by international artists rarely exhibited in Japan. Hwang Seong-tae’s work using a lightbox evoked a strange feeling, floating between sculpture and two-dimensionality.

In addition, I was able to see works by artists familiar to museum visitors, such as Kiyomi Mishima, Kuniyoshi Kaneko, Kei Funakoshi, Yasuo Katsuki, Bernard Buffet, and Yoshitomo Nara.

Below are images of memorable works and gallery names, listed in no particular order.

Gallery Tsubaki (N062) – Moe Nakamura

Pontone Gallery (N003) – Fan Sung-tae (two images on the left)

Summary

The paid zone at Art Fair Tokyo features a total of 104 galleries with booths, offering an overwhelming amount of artwork to view. Since you’ll see both new works and nostalgic pieces from the past, it’s worth taking your time to browse the booths.
