Review
LOMOGRAPHY x ZENIT NEW Jupiter3+ 50mm is a reprint of the classic Jupiter 3 lens, commissioned by Russia’s ZENIT.
In conjunction with the reprint, the lens barrel appears to have been newly manufactured and is shiny and beautiful. The lens mount is the same Leica L39 screw mount as the original, but an L/M mount adapter is included in the lens package. The lens configuration is the same as the previous model and has not changed, but the minimum focusing distance of this lens is 0.7m, which is shorter than the original Jupiter 3’s 1m. The filter diameter is 40.5mm, the same as the original Jupiter3.
There are many original Jupiter 3 lenses on the used market. There are black and silver barrel colors, but most of them have noticeable wear and tear due to aging.
The lens construction is said to be a dead copy of Germany’s Zeiss Sonnar 50mm F1.5, and this lens also features the heavily curved front element, which is one of the characteristics of Sonnar lenses.
There are some scenes where the background blur is a bit jittery, but if you stop down the lens, the blur subsides and you can use it as a normal lens. Compared to the modern depiction of Kosina Zeiss’s C Sonnar, it is somewhat unique, and you can enjoy the change in depiction depending on the camera sensor.
I bought a second-hand item with a rattling lens barrel somewhere, but when I attached it to the Leica-M using the M/L ring that comes with it, I was worried because I couldn’t get it to infinity.
When I changed to the Voigtlander’s 50/75-M/L ring, it seemed to work correctly with the rangefinder, so I thought it was a problem with the included M/L ring being warped or having an odd thickness. Continuing the test, it was found that for close-up shots, the double images matched and the shooting results almost matched, but for distant shots, even though the double images matched, the shooting results were misaligned. When I checked the lens extension and shooting results using the EVF, I found that the index at the 5m focus point was at infinity.
It seemed to have a rather rare abnormality, so I contacted the place of purchase and was told that it was a defect not listed and suggested I return it. The lens itself was a beautiful piece, so I was a little disappointed, but I returned it because there was no point in having a lens that couldn’t be used properly.
Single lenses are sold at a reasonable price on eBay, but with the weak yen level as of 2024, it is becoming difficult to afford them.
