Viewing Report

On January 12, 2008, I visited “Art Deco House: Open House and Concert,” an exhibition themed on the 2008 Tate at the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum. It was a cold, rainy day, and the journey from Meguro Station to the museum was a bit chilly, but the temperature inside the museum was kept at a moderate level, making it comfortable to view.

The photo here shows the museum before the approximately three-year renovation work that began in November 2011. The lamps, a distinctive feature of the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, remain unchanged to this day.

As early as 2008, cracks were already visible in the plaster on the walls and ceiling, and without the renovation work that began in 2011, the museum may not have been able to withstand the current increase in visitors. This truly highlights the need for appropriate maintenance at the appropriate time. As time passes, visitor demographics become more diverse, and it is somewhat unfortunate that warnings such as “Do not touch the artworks” can now be seen inside the museum, which were not necessary before.

Naturally, there will be changes between 2008 and 2024, 16 years later, but below are some of the things I noticed that changed before and after the renovation. The difference in color is due to the use of a different camera and the exposure and white balance not being correct.
