Review

The early ULTRON 37mm F1.7 Aspherical lenses had a design that tapered toward the tip of the lens, and the attached screw-in hood seemed to be a bonus in terms of length, making the design of the lens barrel in this state look a little awkward.
It is a well-known fact that the external thread pitch left after removing the lens hood matches that of the IROOA hood for the Leica Zmicron 35mm, and when this hood is fitted, the lens barrel and hood diameter are almost the same, and only the aperture ring portion is hollowed out, creating a very beautiful, narrow design. This is a design that Koshina seems to have been very confident in.
When used with the M9’s full-size sensor, there is no major breakdown in the corners, and the bokeh is generally not bad, although there are some scenes where a slight roughness is bothersome. These early Koshina-Foktrendar lenses are somewhere between old lenses and digital lenses, and while they are not perfect, I enjoy their subtlety.
The ULTRON 35mm series was renewed in 2015.8 with a new lens configuration and VM mount (F1.7 maximum aperture), and continued in 2021.3 with a new lens configuration and F2 maximum aperture.

Lens configuration diagram is taken from Koshina’s official page.

If the factory hood is removed, this hood can be attached.
