Review

Mutar T* 1.4 for CONTAX645 is a lens converter that increases the focal length of SONNAR 140mm, SONNAR 210mm, and Tele-Apotessar 350mm by 1.4 times among CONTAX645 lenses.
The disadvantage of using a teleconverter is that the F value becomes half a step darker.
There are only three lenses that can be used, and the 140mm has almost the same performance as the SONNAR 210mm when equipped with a teleconverter, and the second-hand price of the Sonnar 210mm has plummeted, with good quality products starting at around 30,000 yen, so I decided to attach it to the 140mm. I hardly feel the need. Therefore, it is essentially a teleconverter for 210mm and 350mm. 350mm is also difficult to obtain, so it can be said that it is practically exclusive to 210mm.

Due to restrictions on the lenses that can be used with the Mutar x1.4, there seems to be a considerable amount of stock in the used market as of 2023, and the price can be found starting at around 10,000 yen. The median price is around 20,000 yen.
The lenses I have can be used with 140mm and 210mm, so this time I checked the performance change when attached to a 140mm lens. I was originally supposed to take the 210mm along with me to compare the three, but since it would be too heavy to take them all with me, I decided against it this time.

When I checked the shooting results on a monitor at 100% magnification, I could see that the resolution of the details was good without the need for teleconversion, but the difference was slight. There is almost no color bleeding due to the addition of a teleconverter. Overall, I think it’s an excellent teleconverter.

My impressions after using it are that attaching a 1.4 teleconverter to 140mm doesn’t dramatically change the shooting range, and if it’s a high-pixel camera, cropping might be fine. I felt that.
Removing it during shooting can cause dust to get into the sensor, so if you are going to use it with the teleconverter attached, you will probably want to take the 210mm with you from the beginning, so using the Mutar x1.4 with the 140mm is a test. I don’t think I use it at all.
