Review: “A wonderful relationship between wood carving and paint”
My thoughts on “Nakamura Moe connect connect,” which I saw on August 23rd and 27th, 2025.
First, I’d like to write about the talk I attended on August 27th. I’ve been looking at Nakamura’s work for quite some time, and I felt that she was capable of painting as well as sculpture.
I was hoping to hear this during the question and answer session, and I was able to hear it during this talk.
The artist specialized in oil painting at Joshibi University of Art and Design, but also created sculptures on her own at the same time, which explains why her paintings are so solid.
She also said that the surface of a sculpture is like a canvas for painting, and that she enjoys creating the final shape with a chainsaw and chisel and then painting on it. I learned that the elements of sculpture and painting are intertwined in her current works. I also thought that she drew her drawings before sculpting, but I was surprised to learn that she often draws them after creating the sculpture, which is a different creative process from what I had imagined.
During the talk, we were able to hear a wide range of fascinating stories, including the overall production of this exhibition, the expressions and sculptural characteristics of the works, and future exhibition plans, making for a very fulfilling experience.
This exhibition is entirely new for 2025, so some pieces connect to past works while others reveal new aspects. At the very back, there is a section that recreates the artist’s studio, making full use of the unique feature of sculpture, which is that everything can be seen except for the support.
The most impressive piece was the large work “Connect,” from which the exhibition is named. The impact of its size, the intricate depiction of the hair and its facial expression, and the varying surface irregularities all loom powerfully and are well worth seeing.
During the talk, the artist explained that the work can be separated into several pieces, and that it is the prototype for the public work “Whirling Journey” on display at Marunouchi Street Gallery, which is a painted bronze casting.
The artist encouraged viewers to compare the two works and take note of the differences in color.
Finally, he recommended that visitors also visit Gallery Tsubaki, located about a 10-minute walk from the Pola Museum Annex, where they can see drawings and miniature versions of the sculptures featured in this exhibition.
