A short report on using the SONY α NEX-C3 with the MS-OPTICS x MAPCAMERA REIROAL 35mm F1.4 lens mounted on the VM-E Close Focus Adapter II.

This test used the “REIROAL 35mm F1.4,” a Leica M-mount-compatible lens released in collaboration with MS-OPTICS and MAPCAMERA. It was mounted on a Sony α NEX-C3 using a VM-E Close Focus Adapter II, which enhances close-up shooting capabilities.

The camera itself is easily portable, measuring 11 cm wide, 6 cm high, and 9 cm deep—about the size of a compact camera with a 1-inch sensor. Although it weighs only 444 grams, its compact size gives it a more substantial feel than its appearance suggests.

About the examples

I took my camera out and photographed hydrangeas in the light rain.

For example 1, I extended both the lens and the auxiliary helicoid to the minimum focusing distance. This set the shooting distance to approximately 0.5 m. I also set the lens aperture to around F2.8. As a result, the subject is not overly blurred, and there is slight flare around the subject near the point of focus, giving the image an overall soft quality.

In Example 2, I focused on a calla lily flower 0.8 meters away and set the aperture to F5.6. The contrast between the white calla lily petals and the black background is striking in this example, as are the beautifully rendered water droplets on the petals.

The last example is a photograph of the sky reflected in a puddle on the road. I chose this photo from many taken on rainy days and after the rain using various lenses because of the interesting patterns on the ground below the water’s surface and the rippling effect of the water.
