1.Usage

The Hasselblad XCD 4/28P is a compact wide-angle lens with a focal length of 28mm released in September 2023 for the X-series cameras.

The main specifications are as follows, and details are listed in the table.

  • Aperture: F4
  • Lens configuration: 9 elements in 8 groups
  • 2 aspherical lenses
  • Minimum shooting distance: 0.22m
  • Hood: Dedicated bayonet hood
  • Built-in 1/4000 lens shutter mechanism
  • Aperture is electronic and controlled from the camera

2.Lens overview

The Hasselblad XCD 4/28P is the smallest and lightest X System lens with a lens diameter of φ75mm and a total length of 43.5mm. The lens has a completely cylindrical shape and only a focus ring on the lens barrel, and its minimalist design does not have a nameplate like the expensive V-line XCD lenses, making it a simple photographic tool.

The focal length of 28mm is equivalent to 22.4mm in 35mm format.

The resolution of the captured image fully demonstrates the advantages of the 100 million pixel X2D, and when shooting distant scenes, the full flat depiction unique to wide-angle lenses is achieved, and when shooting close-ups, the subject is blurred to a certain extent, so there is a great deal of room to control the subject distance and create the desired expression.

The lens shutter has a high shutter speed of 1/4000, and when combined with the maximum aperture of F4, the shutter speed is never insufficient.

The autofocus focusing speed feels faster than the XCD 45P, and although the focus accuracy is largely dependent on the camera, there are few complaints as long as it is used with X2D. The shutter sound is quieter than the XCD 4/45P, which was the quietest lens until I used this lens. It is hardly noticeable even when used indoors, and it feels silent outdoors.

The images output via the Phocus development software have a natural bokeh and a three-dimensional feel, and I feel that this is a very well-made lens. The backlight resistance is also decent, and there is no major breakdown in the image even without the hood.

This lens is designed to be used with a 44x33mm digital sensor, and looking at the MTF chart, the lens’s own distortion is about -2%, so the image seems to be distorted to a certain extent. However, this distortion and lack of peripheral light are corrected when developing with Phocus. Since the correction is done using the original dedicated parameters, there is nothing noticeable in the corrected image.

This lens was released almost a year after the release of the X2D, and it is the fourth XCD lens I have personally purchased.

I wanted a compact wide-angle lens, so this lens was perfect for my needs, and I pre-ordered and purchased it as soon as it was announced.

It has three great features: lightweight, compact, and good image quality, so it has become my go-to lens for the X2D when I’m not sure what lens to bring. I use it with the X2D, but I think you’ll find it just as useful with the X1D, X1DII, and X907.

3.Summary

To sum up the Hasselblad XCD 4 / 28P, it has a wide focal length of 23mm in 35mm format, and together with the X2D, it is lightweight at 1kg and has a quiet shutter, making it a versatile lens for landscapes and snapshots.

In 2024, lenses with focal lengths close to the XCD 4 / 28P, such as the wider-angle lens XCD 25V and the wide-angle zoom lens XCD 20-35E, were released, but the appeal of the XCD 4 / 28P, the lightest and most compact of the Hasselblad X system, will not fade. It is the first lens you should buy when purchasing an X series camera.

Specifications and lens comparison

The Hasselblad XCD 4/28P is smaller and lighter than the previous smallest and lightest lens, the XCD 4/45mmP.
The lens costs about $2,800 new, which is a reasonable price for a lens with a shutter mechanism that has a maximum speed of 1/4000, just like other fast XCD lenses.

The Hasselblad X series has a wide range of lenses, including some with focal lengths close to the XCD 28P.
The detailed differences in specifications are listed in the table below, and the simple differences are as follows:

  • The XCD 25V is slightly wider and brighter at F2.5, the lens is large and heavy, and it has a high-speed 1/4000 shutter.
  • The XCD 30 is slightly telephoto, almost as bright as F3.5, and the lens is large and heavy.
  • The XCD 20-35E is a zoom lens, and the aperture value at 28mm is almost as bright as F4, and the lens is large and heavy.
