Review

The Leica M/M-P typ240 is a Leica M mount digital camera equipped with a 35mm full-frame sensor.
It is equipped with a new generation 24-megapixel sensor, replacing the problematic Kodak sensor of the M9.
For the Leica M typ240 series, there is information that this image sensor was designed by CMOSIS and manufactured by STMicrosystems, but for cameras after the M10, the name of the company involved in the design and manufacture of the sensor no longer appears.

I thought the name of this Leica M would be the M10, a model after the M9, but it became just the M, with the subname typ240. The subname system is also used in subsequent cameras, but the notation is small and I feel that it has been virtually abolished. This is probably due to a naming policy mistake that Leica often makes.
The Leica M typ240 series has a video recording function that is no longer included in cameras after the M10, and can shoot full HD quality video. However, the Type 262, which does not have an LCD monitor, also lacks the video recording function.

It supports live view, uses the rear LCD, and also provides an electronic viewfinder called EVF2. This is the same as the Olympus VF2, and the signal processing etc. seem to be exactly the same, so you can use the Olympus product as is. Please note that it cannot be used with the successors VF3 and VF4 as they are not compatible. Also, the Type 262 from the same M series does not have an EVF terminal, so you cannot use an EVF.

As for the rangefinder part, the viewfinder is 0.68x, which doesn’t seem to be much different from the film M6’s 0.72x. The viewfinder of the M10 has been redesigned to accommodate the thinner body, so the magnification has increased slightly to 0.73x, but I didn’t notice any major differences when using both bodies.

I like the Leica M typ240 series, and have used three of them: the normal M typ240, the M-P Safari model, and the M-P Silver. It has a thick body and is not highly rated in the market, nor is it very popular, but I personally feel that the thick body gives it a sense of rigidity and fits comfortably in my not-so-large hands. Also, when I was shooting, I wasn’t using it in its original condition, and it was equipped with a body case, so I was dealing with a fairly thick camera. It’s probably about as thick as a small single-lens reflex camera. The thickness is sufficiently thin compared to the LEICA S typ007, which is at the extreme of heavy cameras.

This camera’s sensor is already 10 years old, so the specifications feel old. The lowest sensitivity starts at ISO 200, but I didn’t feel it was saturated during the day, so I don’t think it’s a problem. A bigger problem was the color cast that occurred with lenses like the Super Angulon M 21mm, where the rear element was close to the sensor. Overall, it’s not an easy camera to use, but I like that it still has more of an analog feel than the M10 and M11.

I didn’t really like the M10 because it felt flimsy, so I sold it quickly and went back to M-P Silver. I’ve completely lost interest in it because it has the same body size as the M10-R and M11, but just has higher pixel count. One of the reasons I lost interest was that I couldn’t keep up with the pace of price increases.
