Review
LEICA M8.2 is a minor change version of LEICA M8, and the sensor performance is exactly the same as M8. It decreased from /8000 to 1/4000. This maximum shutter speed is the standard maximum shutter speed for digital M-type Leica cameras.
The shutter sound of the Leica M8.2 is a little quieter (less high-pitched) than the relatively loud sound of the M8, but it is louder than the shutter sound of M typ240 and later.
The two years of evolution since the M8 release did not improve the UV/IR issue, and the improvements will be carried over to the M9. The M9 had an inherent problem with the sensor cover glass breaking, so I think the M TYP240 has finally become a camera that can be used with peace of mind.
The images recorded by the M8.2’s 10-megapixel sensor are still quite acceptable.
The M8.2 is traded at a higher price than the M8, but considering the shooting results, it is questionable whether it is worth the price difference. Even though digital cameras are almost perishable, it seems strange that cameras that cannot be repaired are traded at such high prices.
A few years ago, I had the opportunity to purchase an M8.2 Safari at a reasonable price, but I passed on it due to financial issues. Nowadays, you don’t see it on the market, and even when it does, it’s bound to be at a premium price, so I think it’s a shame.
Unlike the M-P (Typ240) Safari and M10-P Safari, the design with the Safari color and red badge tickled the hearts of Leica enthusiasts.
Leica offered M8 users an upgrade equivalent to M8.2 for 240,000 yen, but perhaps because there wasn’t that much demand, a short time later they ran a half-price campaign for 120,000 yen.
The disadvantages of paid camera upgrades, which are carried out even by Japanese manufacturers, are that the upgrade price is quite expensive, and if it is a popular model, it is better to trade it in and buy a new model. Considering the benefits of getting it and getting a new warranty period, you might think that there is little benefit to continuing to use it until you upgrade. Another factor may be that, unlike film cameras, digital devices have many disposable parts.
