Review

The 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM is a large aperture standard lens released by Sigma.

The lens name has EX DG HSM, and the “EX” symbol indicates a high-grade lens among Sigma lenses, “DG” indicates digital compatibility, and “HSM” indicates an ultrasonic motor. Although it is not included in the lens name, it uses aspherical lenses, making it a luxurious lens for a standard lens.

When used with SD Quattro, the autofocus (AF) focus speed is largely dependent on the performance of the camera, so the focusing speed is not extremely fast, but it focuses smoothly and quietly.
It also has sufficient resolution, so it is sufficient even if it is not a successor Art lens.

The Sigma SA mount version is a simple lens barrel with only a focus ring and an AF/MF switch to operate the aperture value from the camera side. The lens position indicator is a scale in meters covered by a plastic cover on the side of the lens.

This lens has a lens diameter almost the same as the lens mount and is not very long, so it can be easily stored in a camera bag. The successor Art 50mm F1.4, released in 2014, is 30mm longer than this lens (68.2mm → 99.9mm) and 300g heavier (505g → 815g), perhaps due to the pursuit of lens performance, but this change is disappointing for users who prefer compact lenses.

Looking at the release status of 50mm focal length lenses by the three Japanese companies that provide lenses for other companies’ cameras, Sigma has had a macro 50mm for a long time, a 50mm F1.4 since 2008, and a 50mm F1.2 for mirrorless cameras in 2024, and has standard focal lengths in its product line. Tamron does not have a 50mm focal length lens in its product line. Tokina had a blank area in its product line until it released the Opera 50mm F1.4 in 2018.

It is believed that these three companies are reluctant to sell the 50mm focal length because it can be covered by the focal range of zoom lenses and because genuine 50mm F1.4 class lenses from camera manufacturers are being sold cheaply. Of the three companies, Sigma has established its position as a camera manufacturer in recent years, and is engaged in lens development in all directions, such as selling larger aperture lenses such as 50mm F1.2 as a supplier of lenses for its own use.
