Review

The Super Angulon M 21mm F3.4 is a wide-angle lens for the Leica M mount that began production in 1963.
It is manufactured by the German company Schneider, and all Super Angulons, including the R mount, are manufactured by that company.

The F3.4 version has a silver exterior and a black exterior, the silver one has an infinity stopper, and the black one has no stopper. It seems that both were produced at the same time, so it is unknown why only the silver one has a stopper.

I bought this lens when I was using a LEICA M9, so I sold it without using it much. As you can see from the examples, when shooting with the M9’s Kodak CCD sensor, the color cast in the periphery is terrible. Also, since the rear lens digs into the camera, metering cannot be done correctly, so AE, which relies on the camera, can result in over-exposed photos. Therefore, I changed to shooting manually halfway through the process. It’s a shame because it was a lens that looked great on the silver M9-P.

Images are excellent except for color cast, with particularly good resolution in the center and minimal distortion. Therefore, the problem of color cast can be solved by making it monochrome-only.

The rear element of this lens is very large, so be careful when using cameras with APS-C size sensors or smaller sensors, as the lens may hit the wall around the sensor and make it impossible to mount it.

For cameras with a 35mm full-frame sensor, the color cast problem may be resolved depending on the type of sensor. Also, depending on the sensor location and method, photometry may not be an issue with some cameras, so we recommend checking compatibility with your existing camera before purchasing.
