Review

The HC 50-110mm F3.5-4.5 is a 2x zoom lens covering focal lengths from 50mm to 110mm for Hasselblad H series cameras. Of the two rotating rings, the one in front of the lens is the focus ring, and the one behind it is the zoom ring.
The lens length changes when zooming or adjusting the focal length. The same zoom lens, the HCD 35-90mm, uses inner focus and inner zoom. As you might imagine from its stubby appearance, this lens is made of glass and is heavy, weighing 1.65kg, second only to the HC 300mm.

Since it is a HC lens series, it covers a sensor size of 53.7 x 40.2mm. Lenses with orange dots have a lens shutter with a maximum speed of 1/2000, while lenses without a dot have a lens shutter with a maximum speed of 1/800.
HC lenses can be used with the X1D/X1DII via the X H Lens Adapter or XH CONVERTER 0.8.

It was the last HC/HCD lens I purchased, and although it was used, it was of average quality with 1254 shutter cycles.
The lens is an old model without an orange dot, the maximum lens shutter speed is 1/800, and autofocus (hereinafter referred to as AF) cannot be used with the X H Lens Adapter and XH CONVERTER 0.8. It was firmware (10.0.0). When using manual focus (MF) with the Hasselblad X series, there is no problem at all, including the shutter drive, but the LEICA S +SH-Adapter does not recognize the lens.

  • When using the X H Lens Adapter, the focal length will be 40mm to 88mm.
  • When using XH CONVERTER 0.8, the focal length will be 32mm to 70mm.

The lens diameter is 100mm, which can be quite intimidating for people who see it for the first time.
Both the focus ring and zoom ring are wide enough, so you can smoothly change the focal length even with manual focus, and it’s easy to grasp the peak of focus when looking at the EVF, and there are no problems with focusing.
From my experience using the HCD35-90, it is true that AF is convenient for zoom lenses because it allows you to focus only on changing the focal length.

The images are excellent with no distortion, which is hard to believe for a zoom lens, and it embodies the fact that the diameter of a lens is what matters most. Since the focal length is 2x and the zoom magnification is suppressed, it would be correct to say that the depiction is comparable to that of a single focal length lens. If you can tolerate the weight, it’s very convenient to be able to cover three lenses at 50/80/100mm.

The maximum aperture value at 50mm is F3.5, which is the same as a single focus lens, and at 110mm it is relatively bright at F4.5.
The model I own has an older model shutter of 1/800, but the low, subdued shutter sound is pleasant.
Lens recognition errors sometimes occur only with the combination of X1DII and XH CONVERTER 0.8, but I continue to use them as they are because I can ignore the errors and shoot. X2D can be used without such errors. Even when using XH CONVERTER 0.8, there is no edge vignetting and the image circle is large enough for medium format film size.

According to the official guide, if you store the lens horizontally for a long time, the center of the lens will shift, so it is recommended to store the lens with the tip facing up. If it’s a used item, you don’t know how it was used, so it’s best to check the operation of the zoom ring and focus ring and avoid using one that doesn’t work well.

AF support

For the orange dot lens, AF is available on the X1D,X1DII,907X and X2D, but it only works with the latest firmware 19.1.0, so if you have 18.0.0, you need to update the firmware. In fact, when I purchased the camera, the firmware was 18.0.0, so the AF did not work when I tried it. After purchasing the camera, I updated the firmware and was able to get the AF to work.
If you have firmware 17.0.0 or earlier, you cannot update the firmware because the firmware area is not enough for 19.1.0.
The AF speed when used with the X1D,X1DII,907X and X2D is not quite as fast as that of a professional SLR, but if you choose a high contrast area, the camera will focus without hesitation, which is easier to use than fast but confusing AF, and is sufficient for my needs.

About FUJINON lens

There are HC lenses from the Fujifilm brand SUPER EBC FUJINON that can be used with the HASSELBLAD HC camera, but only lenses with a maximum shutter speed of 1/800. Compared to the latest maximum shutter speed of 1/2000, the range of expression is narrower. Also, because the lens firmware is old, it is not possible to apply HC lens firmware 19.1.0, which is required to use autofocus (AF) on XCD mount cameras X1D, X1DII, 907X, and X2D.

Therefore, AF cannot be used even if it is attached to an XCD mount camera via two types of mount adapters, X H Lens Adapter, and XH CONVERTER 0.8.

Fuji Film brand HC lenses are not covered by Hasselblad’s repair support, and since Fuji Film no longer provides repair support, there is nothing that can be done in the event of a breakdown. Fuji Film brand H lenses are sold cheaply, but you need to be aware of this when purchasing.

If it is a Hasselblad brand HC lens, even old lenses can be repaired at Hasselblad for a fee.

Since HC lenses are manufactured by Fujifilm, a mount adapter (H MOUNT ADAPTER G) is also available for the Fujifilm GFX series, which has the same sensor size as the X1D, X1DII, 907X, and X2D. This is for MF (manual focus) only, but you can use not only the camera’s mechanical shutter but also the lens shutter.
