SIGMA SD14
Review
The second generation of Sigma’s high magnification zoom lens for APS-C sensors. It covers a focal length range of 18mm to 200mm.I bought this lens because I thought it would be just right as a standard lens for the SD14.Since it is a high-power zoom lens, there is a certain amount of distortion at all focal lengths, but Affinity Photo2, the image editing software I usually use, has a dedicated lens profile that corrects the distortion perfectly. The zoom ring is a two-step telescopic ring that rotates smoothly and without resistance, and the focus ring is AF/MF switchable and is fixed during AF mode. The lens motor is HSM, and even though it was made in 2011, it is much faster than the AF speed of the 24mm SUPER WIDE II made in 1986. 25 years of evolution has been seen. The OS is 4 stops of compensation for the era, but it works reasonably well and provides a stopped down photo for about 0.5sec, which is very much appreciated.
The first generation lens with the same specifications was released in 2007, this second generation was released in 2012, and the third generation was released in 2015. The lens design was different in each generation, with the second generation being more compact, and the third generation being more compact, with the minimum focusing distance reduced to 0.39m across the entire range, increasing the lens’ versatility. As a later development, Tamron released a lens with similar specifications in 2015. The lens barrel is made of highly rigid plastic (Tamron calls it engineering plastic), which affects the weight, and the entire product is very lightweight at 400 g. The list price is 36,000 yen, not too far from the actual price. The minimum focusing distance is 0.5m, and except for macro lenses, Tamron does not pursue the minimum focusing distance very much. This seems to be a tradition of Tamron.
