Review

1.Overview
To use the Hasselblad HCD35-90mm F4-F5.6 with the LEICA S Typ007, you need to use the LEICA S adapter H shown below, which is genuine Leica.
- LEICA S +LEICA S adapter H +HCD3590

When used with the 45mm x 30mm medium format digital sensor used by the LEICA S, it becomes a standard zoom lens with a focal length equivalent to 28mm to 72mm, multiplied by a 35mm conversion factor of 0.8.
This is also true for other LEICA S series, LEICA S2, LEICA S-E, LEICA S typ006, and LEICA S3.
There are two main versions of Hasselblad’s H series lenses: the new version called the Orange Dot and the old version with no brand name, including the FUJINON brand. When used with the Leica S series, it can be used with both the new and old versions, and can also be used with autofocus if there are no problems with the lens.
Detailed specifications of the HASSELBLAD HCD35-90mm are listed in the link below.
2.Usability
The LEICA S Typ007 + Hasselblad HCD35-90mm F4-F5.6 has the same focus speed and focus accuracy as the X2D, so there are no problems with normal photography.
The lens was designed with the digital sensor era in mind, and its size gives it ample room for peripheral depiction, allowing you to obtain satisfying photographic results.
When using a standard zoom lens, the camera weighs 1.3kg, the lens weighs 1.4kg, and the LEICA S-Adapter H weighs 0.3kg, making the total weight 3.0kg, which is quite a heavy piece of equipment.
3.Summary
In conclusion, to sum up the combination of LEICA S Typ007 + Hasselblad HCD35-90mm F4-F5.6,the image quality is satisfactory, but it is large and heavy compared to other medium format zoom lenses. Whether you can tolerate this size and weight is a major point in using it.
Specification and Competitor
Comparing the medium format zoom lenses HCD 35-90 and CONTAX645 VARIO SONNAR 45-90, the size of the HCD 35-90 becomes clear. The weight of the HCD 35-90 is proportional to its size, at 1.4kg, which is 400g heavier than the VARIO SONNAR 45-90’s 1kg.

The original zoom lens for the Leica S is the Vario-Elmar S 3.5-5.6/30-90 ASPH, which has a focal length equivalent to 24mm to 72mm in 35mm format, giving a 4mm wider angle. I am interested in this lens, but I don’t have much of a problem with the wide-angle side because I already own the HCD28mm prime lens, so I haven’t bought it yet.
- Please refer to the VARIO SONNAR 45-90mm, which is similar to the HCD3590.
