Review

The LEICA SL typ601 is an original product introduced by LEICA in the full-frame mirrorless series, and of course it probably has technical cooperation from Panasonic, but it feels much more original as a camera than the SL2/SL2-S.

The buttons on the back, which do not have function prints in common with the LEICA S series, are not a problem once you get used to them, and looking at this simple display, if you are using a camera for everyday use, you will already know the functions of the buttons, so the various prints seem to be a waste. The 24 megapixel resolution is sufficient, and the camera’s responsiveness is good enough that it can still be used today for its shooting performance and functions.
Perhaps because of this, the used price remains stable at around 300,000 yen. Considering the lifespan of digital equipment, I’m a little hesitant to get into it now.

The EVF called Eye-res is quite good and came in handy when using the R lens. I think the LEICA SL series has a lot of meaning in saving R mount lenses, and using an R lens with a genuine LEICA camera + 35mm full-frame sensor will make my long-held dream come true.

If you use LEICA R-Adapter-L (16076) and a lens with a ROM terminal, lens information will be recorded in EXIF, and some zoom lenses can also record the focal length. The following lenses have been confirmed.

  • Vario Elmar 21-35 F3.5-4.5
  • Vario Elmar 35-70 F4
  • Vario Elmar 80-200 F4

However, the next zoom lens was the Vario Apo. Elmarito 70-180 and Vario Elmar 105-280 are lenses with ROM terminals and do not support focal length recording, so the shortest focal length was recorded no matter where they were taken. It is assumed that either the information about the focal length movement is not transmitted to the camera side, there is no function to transmit it, or the focal length information is fixed.

Also, even if you use a macro adapter or teleconverter with a ROM terminal, there will be no information that it was used. I sent a request to LEICA support to have it remain in exif, but it seems that it has not happened.

Leica SL3 was released on March 16, 2024. When I checked the differences from the expected specs, I found that the sensor was generally correct, the memory card was also correct, and the EVF was off without much improvement, so I feel that the overall specs have made a reasonable evolution. The release date was about half a year earlier than expected. The table containing the predictions has been corrected. I don’t plan on purchasing one since I don’t need a 35mm full size sensor and 60 million pixels.
