Review
1．Overview
The Leica TL is a mirrorless camera with a 16MP APS-C sensor that was released in 2016.
The body colors of the original Leica T are black and silver, but the TL is now available in a titanium color that is exclusive to the TL.
The basic functions are the same as the Leica T typ701, but the built-in memory has been increased from 16GB to 32GB.
The battery is the BP-DC 13, which continues from the Leica T.
The last firmware was version 2.4 in 2018, which was changed to support “Leica FOTOS”.
The camera name is also thought to be a product that was introduced after the release of the LEICA SL, because the company wanted to add an L to the series name of the L-mount APS-C sensor-equipped interchangeable lens camera, and this fact can be seen from the fact that the official catalog from the time of the release of the Leica TL that I have on hand has it written as LEICA TL (Typ701).
LEICA’s mirrorless cameras with APS-C sensors ended with the TL2 and CL, released in 2017, in contrast to Sony, which is still releasing cameras with APC-C sensors as of 2024.
2．Usage
I decided that the Leica T was not very useful as a mother ship for manual focus lenses, but I still bought the Leica TL because it had the titanium color. As a fan of the Leica titanium color, it was a camera that I couldn’t pass up. That said, I sold it when I was short on money, so I don’t have it anymore.
The shooting function is the same as the previous Leica T typ701, and it also inherits the same hassle of being difficult to use.
Regarding the increased internal memory, I found some surprising information on LEICA RUMORS. Please refer to the link below for details, but in summary, the internal memory of the Leica T is just a microSD card3, and there is a microSD slot inside the camera, and it can be upgraded.
The appearance has been slightly changed, and the Leica T’s sharp edges are no longer emphasized, but the corners have been chamfered to give a milder impression. If the body were made using a mold, then this chamfering would likely affect the length of time the mold could be used, but since the Leica T-series bodies are made from machined aluminum, it is thought that the change was made purely from a design perspective, regardless of the mold.
