Review

1.Overview

The Leica X2 is a compact digital camera manufactured by Leica and was released in 2010. It has the following features.

Detailed specifications are listed in the table, but the main specifications are as follows:

  • Equipped with a 16.4 megapixel APS-C size sensor
  • Equipped with an Elmarit 24mm lens, with a focal length of 36mm in 35mm format
  • Optional EVF2 (18753) is available as an electronic viewfinder
  • Standard exterior colors are black and silver
  • Many other limited editions have been released, including the Yokohama edition, Kentaro Kobuchi Edition, white, olive, and Paul Smith edition
  • The Leica X2 à la carte offers a choice of three body colors (black, silver, titanium, titanium only available through à la carte) and upholstery (10 types)
  • The Leica X-E (released in 2014) is the same as the Leica X2, with the exception of the exterior, and the specifications are the same as the Leica X2

2.Usability

Compared to the previous model, the Leica X1, the X2 is quicker and easier to use, but the autofocus speed is not that fast.

The lens is a fixed Elmarit 24mm and an APS-C size sensor, so the actual shooting range is cropped and the focal length is equivalent to 36mm in 35mm format. The images captured by the Elmarit 24mm and 16.2 megapixels have a quality that is still good enough in 2025.

The operation system of the LEICA X2 follows the LEICA X1, and is operated with two dials on the top of the camera. If you set the shutter and aperture to A, you can leave it to the program AE mode, and if you set the shutter speed, the aperture is automatically adjusted, so-called shutter speed priority mode, if you set the aperture value, it will change to aperture priority mode, and if you set both, it will change to manual mode.

The Leica X2 is also a camera that seems to assume autofocus, but it also has a manual focus mode for when the camera does not focus, and you can change the mode with the down button on the cross key and operate it with the dial on the back.
The X2 and the lens barrel are just tubes, and have no aperture or focus adjustment functions.

Leica M-type cameras with interchangeable lenses only have a shutter dial on the top of the camera, and focus and aperture are controlled by the lens aperture. Leica users who are accustomed to this method may find the two-dial operation of the Leica X2 a little strange.

The successor model, the Leica X Vario Typ107, allows zoom and focus control on the lens barrel, while the Leica X Typ113 allows focus control on the lens barrel. The aperture is still controlled by a dial on the top of the camera, so it does not have to be a physical aperture, and it is preferable for the lens barrel to have an aperture ring.

With the Leica Q series, which is equipped with a 35mm full-frame sensor, the lens barrel is equipped with both aperture adjustment and focus functions, just like the Leica M-type cameras.

3.Add Info.

The X2 was released with improvements such as the ability to use the EVF2 from the previous Leica X1 model, but the design was questionable. The EVF2 stand was added to the top of the camera, which ruined the clean and complete exterior design of the X1, which had no protrusions other than the operation lever.

Also, the shape of the flash was changed to an oval top with folding legs because the flash was not bright enough, but the position and amount of light emitted increased, but the balanced design of the three circles lined up when viewed from above on the X1 and the unique shape of the flash cylinder rising up were no longer there.

The X2 does not have a thread in front of the lens like the X1, so it was necessary to use ingenuity such as attaching a filter with double-sided tape, so I used the “KIWI foto Leica X2 / X1 dedicated 49mm lens adapter” to protect the lens, as shown in the photo on this page.
This adapter is attached by removing the cosmetic ring on the front of the lens of the X1 and X2. The front of the adapter has a 49mm (0.5mm pitch) screw, allowing the attachment of commercially available filters, close-up lenses, lens hoods, etc. with a 49mm screw diameter.

I didn’t buy the X-Vario, which was equipped with a successor zoom lens, because its zoom range of 27mm to 70mm was not to my liking. Instead, the X2 served as a convenient walk-around camera until I bought the X-typ113, the culmination of the X series.
